Abstract. The article examines the challenges associated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies in political communication. It analyzes the key risks related to the algorithmic manipulation of public opinion, the generation of synthetic content (deepfakes), the dissemination of personalized and targeted disinformation, the reinforcement of information bubbles and echo chambers, and the persistence of a regulatory vacuum. Based on an analysis of international case studies – from the Cambridge Analytica scandal to the use of deepfakes in election campaigns in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Hungary – the article argues that the use of AI in contemporary political interaction creates qualitatively new threats the digital and information security of the society and undermines the fundamental foundations of democratic institutions. Particular attention is paid to the algorithmic shaping of public opinion, the increasing issue of algorithmic bias, and the inadequacy of existing regulatory mechanisms, including the EU Artificial Intelligence Act. The study concludes that there is a need for a comprehensive approach that combines regulatory and legal measures, improvement of technical measures and countermeasures, and enhancement of citizens’ digital literacy.
