Аннотация. В статье рассматривается концепция «собственнического индивидуализма» («possessive individualism») канадского политического философа К.Б. Макферсона в ее методологическом, а не историко-философском измерении. Исследовательский вопрос состоит в том, в каком смысле и в каких пределах данная концепция может служить инструментом анализа аксиоматических оснований либеральной демократии. Концепция Макферсона имеет парадоксальную судьбу: как тезис об интеллектуальной истории английской политической мысли XVII века она была существенно поколеблена контекстуалистской историографией (Дж. Данн, Дж. Талли), однако продолжает активно использоваться в современной теории демократии. Методологической основой работы выступают концептуальный анализ и сравнительно-исторический метод. В статье обосновывается, что понятие собственнического индивидуализма сохраняет силу в качестве аналитического инструмента. Эффективность этого подхода не зависит от спорности его историографического применения к Т. Гоббсу и Дж. Локку или точности атрибуции конкретным авторам. Данное понятие функционирует наподобие идеалистической реконструкции реальных тенденций либерально-демократической традиции. Показано, что в качестве такого инструмента концепция позволяет, во-первых, выстроить периодизацию либерально-демократической теории через напряжение между собственнической посылкой и развивающим идеалом, и, во-вторых, поднять сопоставление либеральной и социалистической демократии с уровня институциональных следствий на уровень социальной онтологии. Сформулированы пределы применимости инструмента. Сделан вывод о том, что концепция собственнического индивидуализма является продуктивным средством анализа оснований либеральной демократии и сравнительной теории демократии.

C.B. Macpherson’s Concept of Possessive Individualism as an Instrument

for Analyzing the Axiomatic Foundations of Liberal Democracy

Abstract. The article examines the concept of “possessive individualism” introduced by a Canadian political philosopher C.B. Macpherson in its methodological rather than historical-philosophical dimension. The research question concerns the sense and the limits in which this concept can serve as an instrument for analyzing the axiomatic foundations of liberal democracy. Macpherson’s concept has experienced a paradoxical fate: as a thesis concerning the intellectual history of seventeenth-century English political thought, it was substantially undermined by contextualist historiography (J. Dunn, J. Tully), yet it continues to be widely employed in contemporary democratic theory. The methodological foundations of the study include conceptual analysis and the comparative-historical method. The article argues that the concept of possessive individualism retains its force as an analytical instrument. The efficacy of this approach does not depend on the controversial nature of its historiographical application to T. Hobbes and J. Locke or the accuracy of attribution to specific authors. This concept functions as a kind of idealistic reconstruction of real tendencies within the liberal-democratic tradition. It is demonstrated that, as such an instrument, the concept enables, first, to construct a periodization of liberal-democratic theory through the tension between the possessive premise at the developing ideal, and, second, the elevation of the comparison between liberal and socialist democracy from the level of institutional consequences to the level of social ontology. The limits of the instrument applicability are formulated. It is concluded that the concept of possessive individualism constitutes a productive means for analyzing the foundations of liberal democracy and comparative democratic theory.
